Reducing CO2 Emissions in Mining – Canadian German Roundtable
Join us for the 2nd Canadian German roundtable to connect directly with leading businesses, researchers, policy makers as well as representatives from municipalities and non-governmental institutions. Speakers from Canada and Germany will explore the themes of technologies for reducing CO2 emissions in mining and material processing, challenges of renewable energy systems at remote mining sites and the role of electrification of mines in meeting energy and carbon goals. Participants will develop a shared understanding of the key drivers; and importantly, the event will enable participants to engage directly with each other, to explore partnerships for joint innovation, trade, and investment.
Context:
Faced with a growing global demand for minerals and metals to develop cleaner technologies, Canada is leading the way with its abundant natural resources and sustainable mining practices.
In 2016, Quebec adopted the “Strategic Vision for Mining Development in Quebec”. According to this plan, environmental damage in the mining industry should be eliminated or minimized to the best possible extent in the future. Further objectives include the replacement of the current energy generation with the aid of diesel generators by alternative technologies. Here, the government is focusing in particular on renewable energies and the enhancement of energy efficiency of mines. The Québec Energy Policy 2030 therefore also supports the improvement of energy consumption rates through new technologies in industrial processes. In 2019, the Canadian government announced its support of the Mining Innovation Council initiative with CAD 2 million to develop energy-efficient technologies. The initiative aims to reduce energy consumption in mining, recover energy from waste and reduce the environmental footprint of mines.
Among the Canadian government’s other current mining sustainability initiatives are the Green Mining Initiative and Natural Resources Canada’s Impact Canada’s $10-million Crush It! Challenge.
Format:
The event opens with a brief plenary to provide a strategic overview, before moving into three simultaneous discussions exploring each of the main themes (see below). After concluding remarks, any participants who wish to, will be able to move into virtual meeting rooms for one-to-one. All sessions and meetings will be hosted virtually on MS Teams.
Workshop 1: Challenges of Renewable Energy Systems at Remote Mining Sites
The objective of the workshop is to discuss current approaches and challenges for the use of renewable energy systems reduction at remote mining sites as well as potential improvements.
Workshop 2: CO2 Reduction through New or Changing Processing Equipment
Representatives from Canada and Germany discuss current as well as new technologies and equipment for the mineral processing industry. This workshop focuses on the discussion on the reduction of carbon emissions through improvements in energy efficiency, process control and renewable energy use, highlighting the role of power electronics, control technology and electrical power processing in mining equipment.
Workshop 3: The Role of Electric Fleets in Meeting Mining’s Energy and Carbon Goals
The aim of the workshop is to elaborate the implementation and usage of electric fleets to reduce CO2 emissions in mining. What are the challenges for the adoption of an electric fleet in the mining context?
